These old smokestacks are everywhere in the country.

Fortunately very few of them are still in use. If you ever see the movie "How Green was my Valley", you'll see them in action in Wales in the early part of the 20th century spewing black smoke from burning coal around the clock.

They gave Edinburgh the nickname "Auld Reekie" from the haze of noxious smoke they produced.
